Founding of the City of Glendale

The history of Glendale begins from the vast Rancho San Rafael used by former Spanish soldiers for cattle ranching. After he died in 1831 Jose Maria Verdugo, who received the ranch in 1784, the ranch passed to his children Julio and Catalina. While Julio had many children, Catalina decided to remain unmarried with no children. One of Julio’s sons erected an adobe in the ranch in honor of her aunt, and it still exists today. In 1861, the ranch ended up divided into two; Catalina taking the northern part and Julio taking the southern part. Prior, the family found it hard to keep their land around 1850 because, the American population was rapidly growing. The various settlements ended up in the Rancho San Rafael. One of the settlements was the town sites of Glendale which started forming in 1887. Schools and churches were constructed while the community became more settled. Although not a large area, it expanded tremendously till the 1920s. By 1912, the bustling hub of Brand Boulevard became the main street of the city.
